AGING IN AMERICA

In 2000 there were approximately 35 million people over 65 years of age and 4.2 million people over 85 years of age in America.

Data from the United States government estimates that by 2010 the 65 year old age group will increase to 40.2 million and by 2030 this population will approximate 71.5 million people.

The 85 year old age group will multiply to 6.1 million people by 2010 and to 9.6 million people by 2030.

As people live to older ages, they often develop a chronic illness and they take an average of 8-12 medications per day. Both the illness and the medication can affect mental status.
